Healing the Past Without Getting Stuck in It

Let’s be honest—healing is beautiful, but it’s not always graceful.

Sometimes we get so deep into understanding why we are the way we are…
we forget that the goal isn’t to live in the past—
it’s to be free from it.

So if you’ve ever asked yourself:
“How do I heal without reopening every old wound?”
You’re not alone.

In fact, it’s one of the most common questions I hear in my coaching work.

Here’s my answer, always:

You don’t heal the past by obsessing over it.
You heal by witnessing it with love—and choosing what you want next.

The Difference Between Processing and Replaying

There’s a fine line between honoring your story and staying stuck in it.

Processing means:
“I see where this pain came from, and I’m ready to let it go.”

Replaying means:
“This is who I am now. This is how the story ends.”

One moves you forward.
The other keeps you circling the same heartbreak over and over again.

Real healing happens when we stop reliving the moment—and start reclaiming the power we lost in the moment.

You Don’t Need to Dig Up Every Old Memory

One of the biggest myths in the healing space is that you have to relive your entire past in order to move forward.

You don’t.

You don’t need to remember every detail.
You don’t need to “get closure.”
You don’t need to analyze every childhood wound.

You just need to acknowledge the energy you’re still carrying—and choose whether or not it gets to stay.

And guess what?
You get to decide.

My Favorite Way to Gently Release the Past

In Month 1 of my Unleash Your Wings coaching program, we use a method I call “Honoring and Releasing.” It’s powerful, and also deeply compassionate.

Here’s a simple version you can try:

  1. Name the moment.
What’s one story you’ve been holding on to? Write it down. Be honest.

  2. Feel it fully.
Let the emotion rise. Cry, shake, breathe—whatever it takes to let it move through you.

  3. Thank it.
It protected you. It shaped you. And now… it’s time to let it go.

  4. Release it.
Burn it, tear it up, whisper a goodbye. Create a moment of completion.

  5. Rewrite your truth.
Write a new story: “From now on, I choose…”
Let this be your next chapter.

You Are Allowed to Be Free

You are not here to carry your past like a burden.
You are here to rise from it.

You are allowed to be whole.
You are allowed to move on.
You are allowed to be joyful, even if the past was painful.

And you don’t have to do it alone.
